Transforming Age

Company Overview

Transforming the perception of age is at the core of everything we do.
As a national not-for-profit organization, Transforming Age is guided by our singular vision to “transform the perception of age” and to make life better for older adults and society. We have a different perspective—one that views aging as a declaration and an opportunity to continue to lead an independent and purposeful life.

We believe that this simple shift in perspective will have profound implications on products and services for older adults as well as for the companies that serve them. Transforming Age is a holistic network of products, services and partnerships that develops innovative housing opportunities, technology solutions and programs for older adults.

Company History

Transforming Age: yesterday and today
Our history reaches back to 1956 when the organization was formed by the Presbyterian Church. The Seattle Presbytery saw an opportunity to extend its charitable and religious mission by providing housing and services to older adults through the creation of Presbyterian Ministries, Inc. (PMI)

In 1962, PMI acquired the grand Exeter Hotel in downtown Seattle and converted it to the retirement community Exeter House which officially opened its doors in January 1963.

Ten months later, Parkshore opened in November 1963 in the Madison Park neighborhood and became one of the first continuing care retirement communities in Seattle. Perched on the shorelines of Lake Washington, Parkshore remains an unrivaled destination for those who value remarkable views and lakeside living.

In 1992, the Foundation was established.

In 2000, the organization changed its name to Presbyterian Retirement Communities Northwest and in 2002, PRCN and the Church severed legal ties.

In April 2007, PRCN began the groundbreaking to build a high-rise residential and health services community. Two years later in October 2009 the doors were opened at Skyline, a continuing care retirement community, which offers independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory support for the growing number of seniors living and relocating to the Seattle area.

In 2014, Fred Lind Manor joined the family of communities as the board of directors and management were looking for a strong partner that can support Fred Lind Manor successfully continue its mission.

In 2015 , GSI Research and Consulting joined the family of organizations. GSI provides market research, feasibility, marketing and sales expertise and management support as well as master planning and development services.

After 60 years of continuing its mission-based legacy, PRCN adopted the name Transforming Age in 2016 to better reflect the organization’s focus on changing the perception of age and improving the lives of older adults.

In January of 2017, Transforming Age acquired eight month-to-month rental communities in the Minneapolis, Minnesota metropolitan area. In September, the organization welcomed Seattle-based Full Life Care as an affiliate, bringing home and community based services and nearly 3,000 clients to Transforming Age’s network serving older adults. In October, Eastmont Towers, a CCRC in Lincoln, Nebraska also affiliated with Transforming Age. Vashon Community Care, a not-for-profit assisted living and skilled nursing community located on Puget Sound’s Vashon Island, is the latest stand-alone community to affiliate with Transforming Age.

Today, the Transforming Age network serves over 5,000 seniors nationwide across 16 senior living communities and through its community services affiliate Full Life Care. In the increasingly competitive senior living industry, Transforming Age continues to grow their impact by embracing affiliations with like-minded and mission-driven not-for-profit organizations. In turn, Transforming Age affiliates preserve their culture, independence, and not-for-profit identities while gaining support, knowledge, research, and resources, to secure long-term sustainability.
