Ranked among the top 20 rural hospitals in the nation by the National Rural Health Association, MDIH is a safety-net healthcare provider for a significant portion of Hancock and Washington counties. Our immediate service area encompasses the four towns of MDI, four offshore islands, and satellite rural communities around the Hancock County seat of Ellsworth. With 500+ employees, MDIH is the second-largest employer on Mount Desert Island.
Notable Accomplishments / Recognition
Mount Desert Island Hospital is the only hospital in the nation to earn the Overall Best Performer Award for patient satisfaction for 15 consecutive years. The Overall Best Performer Award is earned by scoring in the top five percent in the nation in patient surveys conducted by Avatar International, a national hospital patient consulting firm. This award not only reflects the consistently excellent quality of care throughout the organization but the continually outstanding quality of care through the years.
