Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center
Company Overview
Established in 1789, and located in a historic neighborhood in the nation's capital, Georgetown University is one of the world’s leading academic and research institutions, offering a unique educational experience that prepares the next generation of global citizens to lead and make a difference in the world. We are a vibrant community of exceptional students, faculty, alumni and professionals dedicated to real-world applications of our research, scholarship, faith and service. The faculty and staff challenge themselves to engage in the world and be men and women in the service of others, especially the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of the community. These values are at the core of Georgetown’s identity, binding members of the community across diverse backgrounds.
The primary objective of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is—and always has been—to provide the most advanced treatments available to Lombardi patients and, ultimately, to find a cure for this devastating disease. To this end, Lombardi's leadership aggressively encourages and supports multi-programmatic and multidisciplinary research.
Lombardi maintains a commitment to the highest quality patient care. In June 2000, the Georgetown University Hospital became part of MedStar Health, a not-for-profit network of seven hospitals in the DC and Baltimore areas. The partnership between Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and MedStar/Georgetown University Hospital ensures that patients have access to leading-edge cancer care, provided by dedicated cancer professionals in a supportive and caring setting.
The Georgetown University Office of Advancement is the operational arm of the University that provides development services and fundraising support to all of its academic and medical research departments.
Company History
In 1970, the Georgetown University Medical Center authorized the establishment of a cancer center named in honor of Vincent T. Lombardi, former coach of the Green Bay Packers and the Washington Redskins, who was treated for cancer at Georgetown University Hospital. Today, the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center remains a valued member of Georgetown University.
Lombardi was established with funds from the University, federal government and private sources. John F. Potter, MD was the founding director. In 1974, in conjunction with Howard University, Lombardi became the 16th National Cancer Institute—designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The designation was renewed in 1990 under the direction of director Dr. Marc Lippman, and again in 2003 under Dr. Richard Pestell. Lombardi's is led today by Dr. Louis M. Weiner.
Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center continues to demonstrate significant growth in clinical and research faculty membership. Likewise, peer-reviewed funding for cancer research, treatment, education and community outreach activities continues to increase.
