Founded in 1797 on the campus of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dartmouth Medical School (now the Geisel School of Medicine) strives to improve the lives of the communities it serves through excellence in learning, discovery, and healing. The Geisel School of Medicine is renowned for its leadership in medical education, biomedical research, healthcare policy, and delivery science, and in creating innovations that improve lives worldwide. As one of America’s leading research-intensive medical schools, Geisel is committed to training new generations of diverse leaders who will help solve our most vexing challenges in healthcare. The Medical School began granting MD degrees in 1811, just the second school in the United States to do so. For over 30 years in the mid-20th century, it was a two-year medical school, with most students obtaining their clinical training at Harvard Medical School. Beginning in the late 1960s it returned to providing a full four-year curriculum. Today Geisel is the academic foundation of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC), which comprises the Medical School, and its primary clinical affiliates of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health on the campus in Lebanon, NH, The Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center (VA) in nearby White River Junction, Vermont; both only a few miles away from the historic Dartmouth campus in Hanover. For its program in undergraduate medical education (UME), Geisel also partners with California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) in San Francisco, as well as ~50 other affiliated clinical practices across the country.
The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth is located in the neighboring towns of Hanover and Lebanon in the picturesque Upper Connecticut River Valley on the NH and VT border.
