The UNM Foundation is recruiting for a Director of Development for our Grateful Patient Program. The Director of Development, Grateful Patient Program is responsible for developing strategies to continuously increase the involvement of Grateful Patients, family, and friends in giving to the University of New Mexico (UNM). The Acquisition program consists of various fundraising programs including, but not limited to face-to-face, telemarketing, direct mail, and email solicitations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Not an inclusive list)

  • Oversee all aspects of the University of New Mexico Foundation Acquisition/Annual Giving Grateful Patient program.
  • Build a culture of gratitude and giving among Grateful Patients/Families, Faculty/Staff, Friends and Alumni promoting increased support for programs at UNM Health Sciences (HSC) and cultivating a pipeline to potential major gifts.
  • Identify Major Gift prospects and evaluate proper distribution of prospects with HSC development team and leadership.
  • Conduct face-to-face and zoom/virtual visits with Grateful Patients/Families, Faculty/Staff, Friends and Alumni to assess, cultivate and solicit gifts of purpose and meaning to each donor.
  • Prioritize and engage focused prospects according to their wealth rating, relationship with the institution, prior giving, and areas of interest, through annual gifts, to support UNM Hospitals and UNM HSC.
  • Share knowledge of funds that support community health and wellness, research, education, patient care, and faculty/staff programs at UNM HSC.
  • Develop strong verbal, written and graphic appeal for communications with faculty/staff and grateful patients/families for assessment, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.


  • Strong, enthusiastic interpersonal skills; able to effectively communicate and solicit funds in person, on the telephone and in writing.
  • Able to interact effectively with multiple constituencies.
  • Strong organizational skills that include effective management of multiple projects, prioritization of tasks and attention to details and accuracy
  • Exceptional work ethic and the ability to work independently.
  • Maintain confidentiality with sensitive and critical data and information.
  • Ability to be flexible and to work effectively as both a leader and a team member.
  • Some evening and weekend work required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite Applications essential; knowledge of Advance or CRM systems preferred.
  • Organizational planning, structuring, and staffing skills.



  • Baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution; Master’s Degree preferred
  • Five (5) or more years’ experience in annual fund/annual giving; preference in higher education healthcare/health science center and grateful patient programming
  • Proven success in donor acquisition; preference in successful annual giving revenue growth
